Executive Leadership
The CEO's Role in Marketing Leadership
The CEO's role in marketing is not to run it. It is to make marketing leadership possible. When growth depends on marketing and the results disappoint, the root cause is often found in how the CEO engages with the function, not in the function itself.
We commonly see two failure patterns at the executive level.
The first is abdication. Marketing gets delegated entirely, then judged entirely. The CEO steps back because marketing is not their strength, then steps in only when numbers disappoint. Without an executive sponsor, marketing leaders lack the authority to make tradeoffs, and every stakeholder becomes a veto.
The second is interference. The CEO weighs in on tactics. Headlines, colors, campaign ideas. The marketing leader becomes an order taker, strategy gets crowded out by preference, and the company loses the very judgment it hired.
The productive middle looks different. In our experience, effective CEOs do four things consistently:
- Set the business context: revenue goals, target customers, competitive position
- Grant real decision authority and defend it when other voices push back
- Ask about direction and learning, not activity and output
- Hold marketing accountable to outcomes they helped define
A typical inflection point comes when a founder-led company grows past the stage where the CEO can be the de facto marketing leader. The transition is rarely clean. Letting go of messaging decisions feels risky when your name is on the door. But companies that make this shift deliberately, with clear roles on both sides, consistently outperform those where it happens by erosion.
Executive leadership of marketing is ultimately about creating the conditions where good marketing leadership can exist. That is a CEO responsibility, and it cannot be delegated.
