Growth Strategy
A Growth Strategy Is a Set of Choices, Not a Plan
A growth strategy is a set of choices about where to compete and where not to. Most companies that struggle with growth do not lack activity or ambition. They lack the discipline to choose.
We commonly see leadership teams treat strategy as a planning exercise. Goals get documented. Initiatives get listed. Budgets get allocated. The result looks thorough, but it answers every question with "yes" and that is the problem.
Strategy is defined by what you decline.
A real growth strategy makes three choices explicit:
- Which customers you serve best, and which you will stop chasing
- Which advantages you will build on, and which you will let go
- Which opportunities you will pursue this year, and which you will deliberately ignore
One mistake organizations often make is confusing a target list with a strategy. Naming five segments is not focus. Focus means one segment gets most of the attention, the message, and the budget while the others wait.
In our experience, growth accelerates when leadership narrows the field. Sales cycles shorten because the message fits a specific buyer. Marketing spend works harder because it is concentrated. Teams move faster because priorities stop competing.
The uncomfortable part is that choosing feels like losing. Every option you decline looks like revenue left behind. It rarely is. Spreading effort across too many opportunities usually produces motion without momentum, and stalled growth follows.
A useful test: if your strategy document does not contain a short list of things you have decided not to do, it is a plan, not a strategy.
